Back-to-School Art Smock

School has been back in session here in Northern New York for almost a month now and my niece Julia started Kindergarten this year. Her list of school supplies included an art smock, but since she has such a crafty Aunt Trina she couldn't get just any ol' art smock. Don't get me wrong--I'm not bashing all those generic art smocks out there but there's one thing about them that Aunt Trina doesn't like. They all look the same! Soooooo....

My "little" Julia had to get a one-of-a-kind art smock to start her school year right.

I know. Now I want one for myself.
To make this adorable little smock, I used this excellent tutorial by Make It and Love It. Ashley gave a wonderful, easy to use tutorial using a cute cotton print. I took this one step further using this adorable laminated cotton by Timeless Treasures to prevent Julia's creativity from bleeding through her smock to her adorable outfits.

The smock has a super easy Velcro closure in the back.

And super easy ribbon ties on each side.

And while sewing with the laminated cotton was not as difficult as I had anticipated, it refused to ruffle, so I decided to go with a cute little pleat along the pocket instead.

And in the end she was very happy with her art smock and was so proud to "strike a pose" to amuse her aunt's need to blog every crafty thing she does.

I'm still here!

I know...it's been forever. But now that the summer's official come to an end and I'm back to work as a substitute teacher for the local school district, we've been trying to take advantage of the beautiful weather that has decided to stick around.

We've been able to eat yummy popsicles on the front porch until they drip down our arms.

And make funny faces at the camera.

And laugh and smile.

And just relax.

And then of course taking a hose to the children before going in for the night.

Anyway, now that things seem to be settling in, I have plenty of projects that I'll be sharing with you. Check back soon!
